The Guesthouse by Rumi

This being human is a guesthouse
Every morning a new arrival
A joy, a depression, a meanness
Some momentary awareness
Comes as an unexpected visitor

Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they're a crowd of sorrows
Who violently sweep your house
Empty of its furniture
Still treat each guest honorably
He may be cleaning you out
For some new delight!

The dark thought, the shame, the malice
Meet them at the door laughing
And invite them in
Be grateful for whoever comes
Because each has been sent
As a guide from the beyond

in Just-
spring    when the world is mud-
luscious the little
lame balloonman

whistles    far    and wee

and eddieandbill come
running from marbles and
piracies and it's
spring

when the world is puddle-wonderful

the queer
old balloonman whistles
far    and    wee
and bettyandisabel come dancing

from hop-scotch and jump-rope and

it's
spring
and
    the
        goat-footed

balloonMan    whistles
far
and
wee

Jonathan Carroll is already one of my favorite authors for the lyrical beauty of his prose, his whacked-out takes on magical realism, and the deep perverse dysfunctionality of his very human characters.  Now that I've twigged onto his blog via Door, I also find that he's got lovely taste in
