Pirates of Monkey Island
I saw the new Pirates of the Caribbean movie this weekend, and the whole time I was watching it, I felt like I had seen it before. Right around the time they went into the swamp to talk to the voodoo priestess, I realized what I was watching. It was a full length movie rendition of one of the Monkey Island computer games. I mean, c'mon - they had the voodoo priestess in the elevated swamp house who hands out cryptic advice; they had the ineffectual governor whose beautiful, endangered daughter is the love interest; they had a dastardly villain that looked sort of like a young Tim Curry; they had another villain that looked strikingly like the undead pirate guy in the computer game; they had a pretty, somewhat dim hero stumbling around from one encounter to the next; and they had a series of fiddley quests that led to other quests, random games of chance, and all manner of other space fillers on the way to getting the maguffin that is the victory condition. Oh, and the corny jokes. Mustn't forget those.
It was entertaining, to be sure, but my favorite character (and the best developed one, we thought) was the kraken. Or maybe the dog.

and at no point did any part of the movie make any sense. It was totally a badly put together computer game.
What was worse, is I found them selling the "official" gambling dice game in a book store this weekend and wanted to scream. This is not a new game, and it is sure not a pirate game !!!.

If you go to faire this season, you'll see a LOT of elements lifted from this movie. Don't want to spoil it for your flist by mentioning them here, but I'm sure you'll be sitting there saying, "Now I KNOW I've seen THIS show before!"
