Last night, Raj and I went to Matsumoto, a new kaiseki restaurant in Chicago. For those who don't know, kaiseki is a type of dining that involves a strict progression of courses, with the exact content depending on the chef's whim and the season of the year (different foods served at different times of year). This was one of the most phenomenal Japanese meals I've ever had, although it was expensive enough that I sadly won't be going again in the near future.

The hostess/owner, Chiyo-san, was absolutely delighted to have us there, especially when she found out I'd lived in Japan. She'd been studying the menu all day to be sure she could explain everything to us in English, but she spoke a lot of Japanese to me (which, shockingly, I understood most of!) and gave us stellar treatment.
