Checking with the LJ brain

When I was in the Girl Scouts back in the late 70's/early 80's, we sang.  A lot.  Some of the songs were girl scout related, some were religious, and some were sort of hippie/conservationist.  One of the songs of the latter category we learned was called (I think) "The Gift of Water".  The chorus started with the phrase, "Let's give the gift of water/to the children of our children".  It's a song about how important it is to conserve water... "let's use it wisely, keep it clean, and pass the gift along."  My mother remembers some of the lyrics, but not all of them, and it's driving her nuts.  After she sang what she can remember of it to me at dinner this weekend, now she's given me the earworm and it's driving me bonkers too.

Anyone?  We searched on the internet for quite a while based on what we could remember, with no luck.  It's entirely possible that it's not a Girl Scout song per se, but could be some folk song that people liked and so taught/sang to each other.

Having just killed a little time at work looking at web page collections of environmental folk songs, it's entirely possible that it's not just 'some folk song' but a folk song that someone affiliated with your local troops adapted and/or made up that didn't propagate much...

*nod* Definitely a possibility. I was just hoping against hope that someone would say something like, "oh, sure, I know that song, Woody Guthrie sang it on album x" or something like that. :)

Now I wish I'd been a girl scout so I could help :)

I actually really liked the girl scouts. We camped a lot, we sang a lot, and we learned to make a lot of things. Plus, it was filled with other dorks like me, so it gave me a social circle. :)

If you have already, you might try searching on your troop number and town, and seeing if that turns up a lead.

My mom said something about writing to the girl scouts to see if they had any information on it. Referencing the troop number/town is a good idea.

I just checked with my mother-in-law and all her sisters and their daughters. We were all scouts, but none of us recall a song like that. If you do find the words, I'd love to hear them. Sorry I couldn't help.

Thanks for checking!
