So I finally remembered today that I'd been meaning to ask [profile] alexx_kay if he knew of a readily available unabridged translation of Orlando Innamorato, since the last time I went looking I could only find an abridged version that cut out all the bits I wanted to read about (essentially, anything with Bradamante in it).  So I went looking on amazon to see if I could find the abridged version to reference in my email to him, and instead I found this!!!  Unabridged!!!  SQUEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!

(Plus, now I've finally got an excuse to buy this too - it's got recipes with notes on them that say things like, "Haroun al Raschid ate this one all the time."  !!!!!! I mean, !!!!!!   And then I got this Borges book I've had my eye on, and a Georgette Heyer...)

*pant pant pant*  OK.  Book frenzy over.  Whew!

That's the same translation I retold. It's pretty good, all told, though I wish he'd been able to tackle rhyming as well as metricality. Some interesting stuff to be found in the front matter and endnotes, as well.

IIRC, Bradamante doesn't really *have* much to do in this one, until quite near the end; she really comes into her own in the Furioso. On the other hand, there is some seriously kick-ass Marfisa material in this one, not to be missed. Some of it was part of my regular repetoire, back when I still did storytelling often enough to have a repetoire.

I have to admit, I'm a bit of a romantic. I've been wanting to read the story where Bradamante and Rogero "meet cute" on the battlefield ever since I read a brief synopsis of it in Bullfinch's Mythology, but that whole subplot got cut out in the abridged version. So, in perfect honesty, that's what I'm really after. But in general, the abridged version tended to get me really excited about something and then summarize how it turned out, which really annoyed me. A lot.

You say that like it's a bad thing? Surely not!

Oh yeah, that *is* a good bit. I even included a brief reprise of it in my retelling of their wedding festivities. ...Man, I haven't told that one in ages...

Fie upon abridgements!
